When anyone makes a list of the most iconic foods in New York, pizza is usually at or near the top of said list. Tell any New Yorker that you’re heading into the city, and they will passionately give the name of their favorite pizzeria. Here at Mario’s Pizza, we bring a little of that delicious Brooklyn style to North Carolina. Our authentic pizza recipes are guarded family secrets, but we’d love to share a slice or two with your family! If you’re looking for New York style pizza near me, head out to one of our many locations to see what you’re missing.
When someone talks about the style of a pizza, people usually think of one of two things: New York style pizza or Chicago style pizza. In actuality, pizzas vary greatly in many regions, but the difference between New York pizza and Chicago pizza is style.
New York style pizza is flat with a thinner chewy yet crispy crust. It doesn’t have a super doughy crust like some other thinner pizzas. Traditionally, it has a red tomato sauce, shredded cheese, and other optional toppings. This kind of pizza is perfect for eating on the go, since you can pick up a huge slice, fold it, and eat it as you are walking down the street.
On the other hand, Chicago style pizza is a very thick pizza also known as “deep dish.” This type of pizza has a chunkier sauce, with cheese and other toppings layered on the bottom and sauce on top. The edge is higher, like a fruit pie crust, and you often have to eat this kind of pizza with a fork rather than just grabbing a slice.
Whether you like a thinner crust or a deep dish pizza may be a matter of personal preference, but among thinner crust pizzas, many people consider New York pizza to be the best. So what sets pizza from New York apart? And how do we bring those flavors here to North Carolina?
First, many people believe that New York pizzas are the best because of the water, but we actually believe it has more to do with the recipe. We’ve handed our recipes down through the generations, all the way from Italy. Originally, our family operated a pizzeria in Brooklyn before coming to the North Carolina coast and then later moving inland to the Triad region. We don’t need New York water to make a great pizza.
It’s not just about the ingredients. We also use traditional cooking methods for our pizzas. And, like any good New York pizza, our toppings go all the way to the edge of the pie. We make sure every pizza is loaded with flavor.
We love pizza, but if you’re in the mood to eat like a New Yorker, there are a few other delicious dishes to try as well, both here at Mario’s Pizza and at other restaurants and bakeries.
Some of our other favorite iconic New York eats include “street meat” (gyro or pork souvlaki) with white sauce, egg creams, black and white cookies, and of course hot dogs.
Our friendly wait staff would love to answer any questions you have about our pizza menu or other Italian dishes. Here are a few questions our customers frequently ask:

What are you having for dinner tonight? Stop by Mario’s Pizza and let us serve you.
For many Americans, ordering a slice of pizza means a crust covered with tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese. Generally, many people believe this is the original version of pizza. However, long before tomato-based pizza, ancient people ate a version of pizza bianca. If you’re searching for great-tasting white pizza near me, stop by Mario’s Pizza.
From ancient times and throughout the centuries, people ate a form of flatbread with toppings. For example, the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians baked pita bread topped with native ingredients. Typically, early versions didn’t use tomatoes so these early versions resembled white pizza.
It wasn’t until about 1550 that Italians began cultivating and incorporating tomatoes into their dishes. Before then, Europeans believed it was poisonous. As Americans discovered the benefits of tomatoes, news traveled back to the Old World. Then, around the late 1880s Italian bakers began using tomatoes on pizza.
When Italian immigrants landed on the American shore, they brought their culture and old-world recipes. Soon, many New Yorkers were also consuming Italian flatbread or pizza. As the love for pizza spread, so did variations. Chefs created thicker crusts and different sauces. They experimented with varying cheeses and pizza toppings.
Oddly, some of these “new” originals are simply similar versions of ancient peoples’ cheese topped flatbread. For example, white pizza, or pizza bianca, is very close to the meal eaten in Europe about 6 BC.
A chief characteristic of pizza bianca is the lack of tomato sauce. Without the bright red color of tomatoes, the pizza has a white appearance. Hence, its nickname. However, the lack of tomato sauce isn’t the only defining characteristic. For example, chicken barbeque pizza uses barbeque sauce instead of tomato, yet it’s not pizza bianca.
Additionally, you’ll find different versions of white pizza that differ from traditional pizza bianca. However, the traditional Roman pizza bianca uses a few simple ingredients. Typically, chefs begin with a thin crust. They top this with olive oil, garlic, and mozzarella cheese. Sometimes, chefs will also use ricotta and other traditional pizza toppings.
Pizza bianca is a simple, yet delicious and comforting meal, especially when eaten fresh and warm from the oven. The best place to get your white pizza is from Italians who know their way around a kitchen. Brothers Vinny, Tony, and Mario grew up in a large Italian family in Brooklyn, NY. After relocating to North Carolina in 1981, they began selling their delicious pizzas.
In addition to Mario’s authentic NY-style pizza, we also make a traditional white pizza. We top our version with ricotta, fresh garlic, and mozzarella cheese. Plus, we offer plenty of regular and premium toppings to individualize your pizza:
Whew! That’s plenty of pizza toppings to choose from! You can try a different combination for a new flavor each time.
Not every pizzeria offers white pizza. Moreover, finding great customer service is just as important as locating delicious white pizza near me. Here at Mario’s Pizza, we believe in giving you a great experience from beginning to end. Here are a few things you should know about our family-friendly pizza restaurants.
Undeniably, pizza is our specialty! In addition to pizza bianca, we also serve veggies lovers, meat lovers, and NY-style pizzas. Plus, we offer a variety of sizes – 10, 15, 17, 19, or 24-inch pies. We also make a cauliflower crust in a 10-inch pizza and gluten-free pizza in both 10 and 14-inch pies.
However, we also excel at strombolis, calzones, and subs. Our extensive menu options also include authentic Italian dishes like parmigiana, lasagna, and ravioli. Plus, you’ll also find an assortment of salads, appetizers, and desserts.
Absolutely! Whether you’re having a small or large crowd, let Mario’s Pizza help relieve the stress of food preparation.

Convenience, customer service, and great tasting food make Mario’s Pizza one of the area’s favorite restaurants.
When you order from a nearby pizza shop like Mario’s Pizza, pizza isn’t your only option. Our authentic New York style pies are, in our humble option, the best you can buy here in North Carolina. However, our menu is also filled with other offerings, including a wide selection of appetizers. Here are five pizza pairings you can consider the next time you’re ordering from our Italian restaurant.
Our pizza is Brooklyn-style, which means it has a thin, slightly chewy crust with toppings all the way to the edge. Our slices are huge, so a single large pizza can feed the whole family. However, if you love our crust as much as we do, you might want to pair your pizza with our famous garlic knots. These doughy bites pack a punch of garlic and pair perfectly with your slice of pizza.
Along with garlic bites, we also have two other bread starter options: garlic bread and cheesy garlic bread. Both are made with a delicious, thick Italian bread, plenty of garlic, and a side of marinara for dipping.
Our Friday night special is a 19″ one-topping pizza plus garlic knots. Or, if you like the garlic/cheesy bread options instead, check out our Wednesday night special for 17″ one-topping pizza plus any appetizer (excludes wings).
If you’re ordering for Sunday football, tailgating, a birthday party, or any other fun event, why not add wings when you order pizza. Wings are a classic pizza pairing, and we offer both traditional bone-in wings as well as boneless wings. As an added benefit, boneless wings are great for kids who are picky eaters!
With both our bone-in and boneless wings, you can choose the sauce. We offer the following at all our nearby pizza shop locations:
If you love wings, make sure you don’t miss our Sunday special, which is a 19″ one-topping pizza plus 10 boneless wings.
What goes better with pizza than mouth-watering fried foods? However, one of the downsides to ordering food for pickup or delivery is that fried foods don’t always travel well over long distances. That’s a huge reason to order your pizza and appetizers from Mario’s! We have nine locations in Winston-Salem, Clemmons, High Point, and Greensboro, so you are never far from one of our pizza restaurants. Better yet, we recently opened our newest location in Friendly Center. Additionally, our sister restaurant, Tony’s Pizza, has locations in Mooresville, Charlotte, Hickory, and Huntersville, so you can get your pizza fix in that area as well.
In terms of fried appetizers, we offer a variety of options. Fan favorites include:
Why stop at just one? Choose two or three appetizers along with a pizza for everyone in your family to share. You can all taste-test everything and compare notes to choose your favorites.
It’s never a bad idea to add some extra vegetables to your meal, especially when you’re ordering a pizza dinner. Here at Mario’s, we offer a few different entree-sized salad options:
We also offer our garden salad and Greek salad options in party tray size. So, if you are feeding a crowd, it’s easy to add a salad to the meal.
With the exception of our Craisin’ salad, which has a mix of Craisin’ cranberries, sugared walnuts, and feta cheese over a bed of spinach, our salads all start with the perfect blend of romaine and iceberg lettuces. Each has its own toppings – check out this article about our salads for more details.
While we’ve mainly been talking about different options to add to your meal at our nearby pizza shop, our authentic Italian desserts pair nicely with pizza as well. Our recipes come straight from our family and trace all the way back to Italy. You can find the following desserts on our menu:
We also offer cannoli trays, in case you are feeding a whole party. All four options are a delicious sweet treat to end your meal.
We’d love to answer any questions you have about our pizza, appetizers, salads, desserts, or other delicious Italian food in Greensboro, Clemmons, High Point, and Winston-Salem. Here are a few frequently asked questions we get:
Yes! You can come into any of our nearby pizza shop locations to sign up for our rewards program or download our app on Android or iOS. Order through the app or simply give your number to a member of our staff to earn points on every pizza.
We have several vegetarian dinner options, and we also have gluten-free and cauliflower crusts. Our staff takes food allergies and special dietary needs very seriously, so if you have questions or concerns, just ask. Keep in mind, because of the possibility of cross-contamination (lots of flour flies around in our kitchen), we cannot guarantee that any dish is completely free of gluten.
In addition to pizza, appetizers, salads, and desserts, we also offer several options for entrees when you are craving Italian food. This includes subs, pasta dishes, calzones, stromboli, and more. Stop by or call us today to order your favorites.
Travel to North Carolina and you’re likely to indulge in some regional favorites like Lexington BBQ. However, many national chains also have their origins here in the Tar Heel State. Have you ever wondered what food Greensboro NC is famous for? Let’s take a look at some legendary brands that began here.
Mt. Olive Pickles, Lance Crackers, Pepsi, Cheerwine, and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts are all well-known brands that began in our state. Additionally, many famous eateries began right here in the Tar Heel state.
Already a successful restaurateur, Wilbur Hardee liked what he saw at a McDonald’s in 1960. He decided to open a similar-style restaurant in Greenville. To give his burgers a better flavor, he cooked the burgers over a chargrill. His new restaurant was an immediate hit and he planned several more.
Within a few months, he forged a business deal with 2 men, Leonard Rawls and Jim Gardner. The partnership quickly soured and Wilbur sold his share and the use of his name. Hardee’s went on to open 1,800 restaurants across the U.S. while Wilbur went on to manage several other eateries.
Hardee’s franchise owner, Jack Fulk, and Kentucky Fried Chicken executive, Richard Thomas, partnered to open Bojangles in 1977 in Charlotte. Specializing in Cajun fried chicken and fresh, homemade buttermilk biscuits, the restaurant soon became a favorite eatery with local residents. Today the chain has about 340 locations in NC alone.
In 1989, Morris Reaves opened the first Cookout restaurant on Randleman in Greensboro. This favorite eatery stands out for its inexpensive prices and the multitude of sides. Plus, the eatery serves another NC original, Cheerwine.
Furthermore, you can choose from over 40 different shake flavors. Additionally, you can mix these flavors to create new combinations. Also, many locations stay true to their origins by serving customers through drive-in only.
While this pizzeria is only a legend within the Piedmont area, Mario’s Pizza continues to spread throughout North Carolina. It all began in 1981 when brothers, Tony, Vinny, and Mario, moved from Brooklyn, NY to NC.
We began selling our signature style NY style pizza at our first pizzeria in Jacksonville. Since then, we’ve expanded the menu to include salads, calzones, strombolis, and several other authentic Italian dishes. Moreover, combined with our sister store, Tony’s Pizza, we have a total of 15 Italian restaurants throughout the state.
A North Carolina sweet treat had its start in 1937. At that time, Vernon Rudolph bought a secret yeast-raised doughnut recipe from a New Orleans French chef. He rented a building in historic Old Salem to bake his doughnuts for local grocery stores. When passersby began asking to buy some, Vernon cut a hole in an outside wall to sell directly to customers.
Although most people eat them for breakfast, doughnuts are actually a dessert. So, you would think with Krispy Kreme originating here in the Triad, that would be North Carolinians’ favorite treat.
Furthermore, North Carolina is a top producer of pecans, peaches, and sweet potatoes. Again, you might think our most popular dessert would be pecan pie, peach cobbler, or even sweet potato pie.
However, the most popular dessert in the Tar Heel state is a supremely moist cake. According to several sources, coconut cake tops the list.
As far as snack foods go, this one’s a toss-up. Some surveyors put Starbursts at the top, while others cite Muscadine grapes or Doritos as the favorite.
If you’re looking for some great Italian food Greensboro NC residents love, stop by Mario’s Pizza. If you’ve never tried us, you may have questions about our Italian restaurants. Below, we’ve answered a few frequently asked questions to get to know us better.

Thin, thick, stuffed, or deep dish crust, Americans love their pizza. As a mealtime essential in many households, most people eat pizza at least once a week. Moreover, as statistics show, most people prefer NY style over others. Yet, finding great-tasting NY style pizza outside of Manhattan isn’t always easy. If you’re looking for the best NY style pizza near me, visit Mario’s Pizza. We have multiple locations throughout the Triad in Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Clemmons and High Point.
Are pizzas really that different? We’ll let you decide as we examine some of the most popular kinds:
The grandfather of all pizza, Neapolitan traces its history back to Naples, Italy. It was during the 18th century when Italians began topping traditional flatbread with tomatoes. One baker, Raffaele Esposito, also added mozzarella and basil creating the first pizza.
At the turn of the century, approximately two million Italians emigrated to America, many settling in New York City. Although these immigrants brought their recipes from the old country, sometimes they tweaked them to meet new demands.
During this time in history, workers needed cheap, transportable food. Typically, traditional Neapolitan pizza tends to be soft in the middle, often requiring a fork and knife to eat. With a few changes, pizza became foldable with a crispy outer crust. This new kind of pizza quickly became popular due to its portability and price.
The year was 1943 when two entrepreneurs opened a restaurant, Pizzeria Uno, in Chicago. Owners, Ike Sewell and Richard Ricardo Sr., served a new kind of pizza, deep dish.
Featuring a thick pizza crust with the ingredients in reverse, the pizza became an immediate hit. Deep dish pizza has layers of mozzarella cheese, toppings, and then crushed tomatoes on top.
Another style of deep dish pizza became popular in Detroit in 1946. Tavern owner Gus Guerra abandoned the idea that pizzas must be round. Instead, he used square pans and a different kind of pizza cheese, Wisconsin brick. The mild and sweet flavor of the cheese and soft, airy square crust, combined to create a new favorite.
Also around the same time as Chicago and Detroit pizza emerged, St. Louis restaurateur Amedeo Fiore introduced his version. Discarding the use of yeast in the dough, this pizza crust has a cracker-like consistency. Moreover, St. Louis style pizza uses a unique blend of cheeses particular to the area, Provel. A gooey combination of white cheddar, Swiss, and provolone, Provel lends a sharp flavor with smoky undertones.
Most people agree that NY style pizza is their favorite. Unfortunately, many restaurants fall short of copying the exact combination of factors to create the perfect slice. Often, making this masterpiece is a puzzle that has taken on mythical proportions. From the speculation of something in the water to the ovens, critics have sought the problems associated with subpar pizza.
Generally, NY style pizza has a thin crust with a crunch and chewiness without being too doughy. The crust must be flexible enough that you can fold it in half. To achieve this consistency, chefs use high-protein flour with extra olive oil and sugar. Furthermore, pizza chefs always hand-toss the dough.
Usually, the sauce has onions, garlic, basil, and oregano instead of crushed tomatoes. Additionally, you must use shredded, low-moisture mozzarella for the pizza cheese.
Even baking requires special instructions because the oven temperature will affect the taste and texture of your crust. NY style pizza requires a very hot oven for its signature flavor and texture.
