In the Charlotte or Hickory areas? Visit our sister restaurant, Tony’s Pizza!
The city of Winston Salem is a fascinating place with a vibrant culture. It’s also the birthplace of Krispy Kreme Donuts, Texas Pete, and Dewey’s Bakery. Some other iconic foods include Lexington-style barbeque, Moravian chicken pot pie, and sugar cake. However, when you’re searching for great pizza places in Winston Salem, visit Mario’s Pizza.
Pizza arrived in the U.S. with the Italian immigrants in the late 19th century. Throughout the years, innovative chefs tweaked and changed the original recipe so that America now has several different kinds. Chicago, Neapolitan, Sicilian, or NY style – you’ll find plenty of pizza places in Winston Salem. Overall, the most popular style is NY style.
So, what makes NY style pizza different from other versions? The thickness of the crust, choice of cheese, or arrangement of toppings distinguish each pie from the others. For example, both Chicago and Sicilian have thick crusts with the sauce on top of the cheese.
Whereas NY style shares some similarities with its Neapolitan predecessor, it also has some unique characteristics. Both are thin crust pies, but NY slices are oversized. Plus, Neapolitan uses fresh tomatoes and mozzarella compared to NY which uses tomato sauce and low-moisture mozzarella.
With the popularity of NY style pizza, you’ll find plenty of nearby pizzerias including several national brands. However, Mario’s Pizza is a locally-owned restaurant whose owners originally came from a large Italian community in Brooklyn, NY. Our recipes have been handed down from our ancestors who emigrated from Calabria, Italy. The Mario’s difference is one you can taste.
Our pizza pie begins with fresh ingredients and a hand-tossed crust. Then, we blend tomatoes with spices to top our crust with our delicious sauce. Of course, nothing but mozzarella cheese will do.
But what about toppings to personalize your pie? We offer 32 options, more than the competition. Plus, our pies are available in several sizes:
Moreover, you’ll find several specialty pizzas with toppings that complement each other perfectly:
You won’t miss the tomato sauce on this cheesy pie loaded with ricotta, mozzarella, and garlic.
A vegetable lover’s dream with fresh tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, black olives, spinach, and mushrooms.
We heap on the bacon, beef, ham, pepperoni, and sausage to satisfy meat lovers’ cravings.
For some of everything, try this pie with pepperoni, sausage, beef, Canadian bacon, mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, and black olives.
This unique pie has chicken, bacon, onions, and our special spicy buffalo sauce.
If you’re diabetic, or watching your carbs, this is the crust for you. Furthermore, it has more fiber and protein than traditional pizza crust.
Diners on a gluten free diet will love our rice-based crust. While we take food sensitivities seriously, we can’t prevent cross-contamination since we don’t have a dedicated kitchen.
Although pizza is a popular menu item, at Mario’s, we understand you may be in the mood for something else. That’s why we have a full menu of delicious Italian dishes:
Plus, we also offer appetizers, salads, subs, calzones, strombolis, and desserts.

There’s something about eating a dish of baked lasagna. The tangy, sweetness of the tomato sauce, gooey cheese, and pasta tantalizes your taste buds in every delicious bite. For good reason, it’s one of America’s favorite comfort foods. Moreover, when you want some of the best lasagna near me, stop by Mario’s Pizza.
Indulging in a plate of baked lasagna releases some feel-good hormones in your brain. This dish belongs to a category of meals we call comfort foods. With the first bite, stress and anxiety can melt away as positive memories and emotions surface.
Of course, the best tasting lasagna begins with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. But, which ingredients do you put in your dish? Do you prefer using bechamel sauce like the version from the Emilia-Romagna region or ricotta like the Naples recipe?
Like many other foods originating in Italy, you’ll find some variations in this dish as you travel through different regions. In the north, most Italians use spinach pasta layered with tomato and bechamel sauce followed by a sprinkling of parmesan. The southern version is more like the American version. It has pasta noodles layered with meat tomato sauce, ricotta, and mozzarella.
Even so, when Italians emigrated to America, they couldn’t find the same ingredients as they did in their homeland. While keeping as much as possible to tradition, Italian immigrants substituted some ingredients. Today, brothers Tony, Mario, and Vinny replicate many of their family recipes from Calabria Italy in Mario’s Pizza kitchens.
Usually, baked lasagna can stand alone as a satisfying dish. However, sometimes you may want something extra. Like many other Italian dishes, lasagna pairs well with many different sides:
The fresh, crisp flavors of salad vegetables offer a nice contrast to the rich, savory flavor of lasagna.
How can you get every last bit of that delicious lasagna sauce? An order of garlic bread (with or without cheese) can soak it up.
With a robust buttery, garlic flavor, garlic knots pair well with any Italian dish. They have a crispy exterior and soft chewy interior making this side a popular choice.
Any way you like them, spicy or sweet, wings add a nice flavor contrast to lasagna.
The sweetness of the onion combined with its crispy exterior adds a satisfying crunch to your meal.
Of course, the best news about these pairings is that you can order all of them at Mario’s Pizza. Plus, we have plenty of other sides to choose from:
Although all these menu items are quite tasty, you’ll find many other delicious pasta options at our local Italian restaurants. We serve several other Italian dishes:
And, of course, we sell pizza. By the slice or pie, our NY style pizza has the foldable, crispy crust you know and love. Additionally, we offer more toppings and sizes than our competition. Our pies range in size from 10-inch to 24-inch with a choice of over 30 toppings.
Furthermore, we serve several specialty pizzas:
Are you still looking for more options? We also have calzones, strombolis, and hot and cold sub sandwiches. To finish your meal, we offer Italian desserts tiramisu, cannoli, limoncello mascarpone cake, and NY style cheesecake.

Many Americans dine out 3 times per month, on average. Moreover, when they eat out, Americans prefer casual dining over fast food and fine dining. As a middle of the road option, these eateries offer convenience in a relaxed atmosphere with affordable options. When searching for a great restaurant serving casual food near me, stop by Mario’s Pizza.
Increasingly, eating out has become a natural part of the American lifestyle. With work, children’s activities, and errands, many families simply don’t have time to cook. Dining out offers convenience with a chance to enjoy time with your family.
Yet, when it’s time to choose restaurants, you have many choices from fast food to casual to fine dining. While fine dining has its place, it’s usually reserved for special occasions when you have time to savor your meal.
Another option is fast food with its appealing cheap and quick options. However, fast food restaurants offer a simple, standardized menu with fewer meal selections. Usually, most of the choices aren’t very healthy either as they’re loaded with sodium, sugar, and saturated fat.
Alternatively, casual restaurants offer higher quality food made to order with fresh, healthy ingredients. Typically, these eateries have an extensive menu offering a wide variety of dinner options with something for everyone. Moreover, menu items have reasonable prices making eating out affordable. Finally, eating in these establishments is a comfortable and relaxed experience, perfect for families with young children.
Of course, you’ll find many casual dining choices in any urbanized area like our Piedmont Triad region. Some popular options include Japanese, Mexican, Middle Eastern, and American cuisine. However, for the best Italian casual food near me, choose Mario’s Pizza.
For over 40 years, brothers Mario, Vinny, and Tony have been serving delicious NY style pizza to North Carolinians. Today you’ll find Mario’s Pizza in 9 convenient locations making it easy to enjoy our casual food:
Pizza is the ultimate casual dining food. Eating it doesn’t require a knife or fork and it’s ok to be a little messy. Moreover, when you choose to dine-in, you can savor the deep, rich flavor of a good beer. The complementary flavors of pizza and a brew take your dining experience to a whole new level.
We offer 5 different pizza sizes from 10-inch to humungous 24-inch. Our topping selection includes 32 delicious options to personalize your pie. Plus, our menu also includes specialty pies like meat lovers, white pizza, or gluten free crust.
Of course, Italians know a thing or two about pizza. They also understand the nuances of good pasta and the subtle notes of wine. When dining at our restaurant, you can also enjoy the complex flavor of one of our vintages. Pair wine with pizza or one of our homemade Italian dishes:
Are you bringing the kids along? We have a kids’ menu with options priced at $5 or less with all their favorites. Plus, kids’ meals come with their favorite soft drink.
Furthermore, you can also add tasty appetizers to enhance your entrée. We have over a dozen along with salads, subs, and delectable Italian desserts.

If you’re looking for pasta restaurants near me here in the North Carolina Triad, there is no shortage of options. However, not all pasta is created equally! Here at Mario’s Pizza, we create authentic pasta dishes based on our family recipes all the way from Italy. Don’t settle for anything less when deciding where to go for dinner.
Some people will spend hours arguing about what constitutes “real” Italian food. However, we think it comes down to one thing: using high quality, fresh ingredients to make recipes that are actually from Italy. Many of the recipes you’ll find at Italian restaurants are just a shadow of that food you’ll actually get in Italy. That doesn’t mean these dishes can’t be good, but if you’re looking for Italian restaurants near me, it makes sense to look for authentic Italian dishes your entire family will love.
Our family has lived in North Carolina for several decades, but we originally got our start running a pizzeria in Brooklyn. Before living in New York, our family lived in Calabria, Italy. This region has, in our humble opinion, some of the best food in the world! We incorporate our heritage into every dish we serve.
You can learn more about the food of Calabria here. Basically, it’s all about turning humble ingredients into special dishes you just can’t stop eating. We bring that philosophy to our family-owned restaurants here in North Carolina, because not everyone can travel to Italy to eat delicious pasta.
While every Italian has their favorite pasta dish, we try to serve a variety of homemade options here at Mario’s Pizza. Here are your pasta options at our Italian restaurants, made with our delicious pasta sauce:
We serve our pasta entrees with a side salad and an order of our famous garlic knots. You won’t walk away from a dinner at Mario’s hungry!
Keep in mind that we also have a few pasta options on our kids’ menu. We’re the perfect place to eat when you’re looking for family restaurants near me. Your children deserve tasty options, so we have eight different choices for kids’ meals including our kids’ spaghetti, ziti, or 4-piece cheese ravioli. They can enjoy their pasta with our traditional marinara sauce or a butter sauce. We can also add meatballs to the spaghetti or ziti options, and every kids’ meal comes with a drink in a reusable cup with a lid.
Serving quality food is the cornerstone of our restaurant. Whether you order pasta or another dish from our menu such as pizza, subs, salads, calzones, or stromboli, we want you to love every bite. Here are a few ways we ensure that our food is the best in the area:
We’d love to serve you one of our dishes so you can taste for yourself what sets us apart.

The next time you’re searching for pizza near you, make sure Mario’s Pizza is on your radar. We serve up authentic New York style pizza using recipes our family has passed down through the generations. Your Google search for “places to get pizza near me” won’t bring up any results tastier than Mario’s Pizza. Be warned: our pizza is addictive!
In the United States, there are two main types of pizza: hand-tossed style and deep-dish style. Hand-tossed pizzas have a flat crust spread with sauce and then layers of cheese and other toppings. New York style pizza is in this category pizza. Deep-dish style, on the other hand, is more of a layered pie with crust on the bottom and up the sides, then cheese, and finally sauce on top. This kind of pizza is most commonly associated with Chicago.
Many regions have their own style of hand-tossed pizzas, but New York has one of the most famous. Authentic New York pizza has a thin, round crust. The crust is typically thinner than other pan pizzas compared to what you find chain at restaurants like Pizza Hut and Domino’s. Like traditional New York style pizza, our crust is slightly chewy and always crispy, which makes it the perfect option for loading up on sauce and toppings. Yes, you can fold our slices in half just like a New Yorker walking down the street of the city!
We know New York style pizza because that’s where our family started our restaurants before moving south to North Carolina. We began in Brooklyn using our family favorite recipes that date back to when our ancestors lived in Italy. Today, our family operates nine Mario’s Pizza restaurants in the Triad along with several Tony’s Pizza restaurants in the Charlotte area.
Not only are our pizzas delicious, but we also offer a wide range of traditional Italian pasta entrees. There’s something for everyone at Mario’s! Like with the pizza, our family passed down these recipes through the generations. You can get a real taste of Italy when you come to our Italian restaurants.
Our reviews confirm just how tasty our pasta is! Here are some recent reviews from real customers:
“The best pepperoni calzone I’ve had since leaving Chicago! We also had the chicken parmigiana with spaghetti and it came with a side salad (yum) and garlic knots (also yum) I recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for Italian food at a considerable bargain. Will definitely order again from them!”
– Amy D.
“I ordered baked ziti and was surprised by how large it was. It was generous considering the standard size I’m used to getting at other pizzerias. There was enough to share with my hubby the next day for lunch!”
– Anida K.
“Oh my goodness, this place is so yummy! We ordered the cheese pizza, spaghetti with a side of meatballs and the hot chicken wings. My kids love it! The prices are very reasonable and the staff are always so friendly! The kids always ask for Mario’s when we are visiting North Carolina.”
– Deborah M.
“I always get the lasagna and it is filling and tasty and comes with a small salad. It’s so good I’ve never had anything else on the menu-highly recommended!! I’ll be back…”
– Eric C.

The city of High Point is probably best known for hosting the world’s largest furniture trade show. Yet, the city has a vibrant cultural scene hosting several art, music, and multicultural events. Of course, you’ll also find plenty of restaurants to grab a bite to eat when exploring all the city offers. It’s here you’ll find Mario’s Pizza serving what many locals consider the best pizza in High Point NC for dine-in food and takeout.
Although smaller than Greensboro or Winston-Salem, High Point still encompasses almost 60 square miles of territory. Thus, we’ve located 2 Italian restaurants within the city to serve our customers:
Within the Piedmont Triad area, you’ll also find several other locations for Mario’s Pizza:
At these locations, we serve various Italian dishes including our specialty, NY style pizza. This style features large slices with a foldable, crispy crust. To achieve its signature texture, we hand toss the dough to stretch it to shape.
In addition to our traditional style pizza, we offer several specialty pizzas. These pies begin with the same great crust. Then we top the pizza with a combination of toppings for a unique flavor:
No matter what size crowd you need to feed, we have the size for you. Our pizzas range from 10-inch to very large 24-inch pies.
Very similar to pizza are its cousins the calzone and stromboli. Although all 3 include crust, cheese, and toppings, you’ll notice key differences between them.
Like pizza, calzones originated in Italy when 18th-century chefs began to fold the unbaked pizza dough over the toppings. Once baked, this created a sandwich-type meal that working people could eat on the go. Usually, restaurants serve tomato sauce on the side for dipping and the calzone has a moon shape.
On the other hand, the stromboli is an American invention created in the 1950s. While you fold calzone dough, you roll stromboli dough into a log. Furthermore, strombolis are much larger, feeding several people. Plus, strombolis have sauce baked inside.
Whichever you prefer, we’re serving stromboli, calzones, and pizza daily! Plus, our Italian restaurants serve Italian entrees, appetizers, subs, salads, and desserts. We even have a kids’ menu with their favorites priced at $5 or less.
Ultimately, the best way to rate a restaurant is by the comments left by its customers. Many of our diners love our pizza as evidenced by their reviews. Here is what a few of them say:
Excellent food. Always know you are going to get good, friendly customer service and food that never disappoints. Not only this location, but all of the others around town live up and have the same great level of quality and service one can ask for. – Jarrett H.
I love this place. Pizza is always hot and delicious with great sauce, employees couldn’t be nicer, and everything else I’ve had has been really great. – Jessica T.

A few years later, the brothers received an offer to open a pizzeria off Hanes Mall Boulevard in Winston-Salem. Today, Mario’s Pizza has 9 locations in the Triad and 6 in the Charlotte area under the name Tony’s Pizza. Plus, we’ve expanded our menu from pizza to include a variety of other Italian dishes.

What are you searching for when you want good pizza near me? Of course, it begins with something that’s delicious. Yet, you also want excellent customer service at a great price. Mario’s Pizza is one of those family-owned restaurants that consistently delivers everything you expect in a pizzeria.
Who knows pizza better than an Italian family from Brooklyn, NY? After moving south, brothers Vinny, Tony, and Mario opened their first NC restaurant in 1981. Since then, we’ve been using our traditional family recipes to bring you a taste of Italy. We use fresh ingredients and specialty ovens to create the perfect pie.
Our NY style pizza has a thin hand-tossed crust. Then, we cover it with our homemade tomato sauce. Finally, we top it with mozzarella to the edge before baking it at the ideal temperature for ultimate flavor. Plus, we offer plenty of topping so you can customize your pie:
Moreover, we also offer several specialty pizzas embracing your favorite flavors:
Meat lovers will appreciate this one. Named after our home turf in NY, we load it with five different meats: sausage, pepperoni, bacon, beef, and ham.
If you prefer vegetables, order “The Greenhouse”. We top this pizza with mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, and black olives.
When you’re in the mood for a little bit of everything, order The Worx. It has sausage, pepperoni, beef, Canadian bacon, black olives, mushrooms, onions, and bell peppers.
The newest trend is pizza with a savory kick. Topped with onions, bacon, cheese, chicken, and our own buffalo sauce, you’ll love the heat of this pie.
A lack of tomato sauce is what gives this pizza its name. Instead, this pizza has mozzarella, ricotta, and garlic.
We also offer varying proportions depending on the crowd you’re feeding. You can order any of these delights in 10″, 15″, 17″, 19″, and 24” sizes. Our super-sized 24-inch is great for a party! Likewise, we offer party trays of our Italian dishes as well.
Finally, we understand how difficult it is to eat out when you have dietary restrictions. Thus, we also offer both a rice-based and cauliflower crust as well as vegan cheese. However, while we make every effort to avoid cross-contamination, we only have one kitchen. Hand-tossing pies can potentially allow flour to settle on your gluten free pizza.
While pizza pies are our specialty, we also create several other mouth-watering Italian dishes. Of course, we have pasta on the menu including spaghetti and baked ziti. Most people have strong preferences when it comes to their favorite style. As you travel across the United States, you’ll find pizzerias serving a variety of pizzas with different characteristics:
What’s the favorite among Americans? Typically, most consumers prefer thin over thick crust by a narrow margin. Moreover, the most popular thin crust pizza is NY style. While cheese pizza is the overwhelming favorite, pepperoni is the number 1 topping.
If we measure pizza restaurants per person as the benchmark for popularity, Connecticut wins. This state has 3 pizzerias per person. Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Iowa round out the top 5 states with the most pizzerias.
Americans love pizza and consume over 6000 slices in their lifetime. Thus, if you’re planning a party, pizza is a great menu option. It’s popular, affordable, and customizable. Furthermore, as we mentioned, we offer several party trays of Italian dishes to add variety to your menu.

Travel to North Carolina and you’re likely to indulge in some regional favorites like Lexington BBQ. However, many national chains also have their origins here in the Tar Heel State. Have you ever wondered what food Greensboro NC is famous for? Let’s take a look at some legendary brands that began here.
Mt. Olive Pickles, Lance Crackers, Pepsi, Cheerwine, and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts are all well-known brands that began in our state. Additionally, many famous eateries began right here in the Tar Heel state.
Already a successful restaurateur, Wilbur Hardee liked what he saw at a McDonald’s in 1960. He decided to open a similar-style restaurant in Greenville. To give his burgers a better flavor, he cooked the burgers over a chargrill. His new restaurant was an immediate hit and he planned several more.
Within a few months, he forged a business deal with 2 men, Leonard Rawls and Jim Gardner. The partnership quickly soured and Wilbur sold his share and the use of his name. Hardee’s went on to open 1,800 restaurants across the U.S. while Wilbur went on to manage several other eateries.
Hardee’s franchise owner, Jack Fulk, and Kentucky Fried Chicken executive, Richard Thomas, partnered to open Bojangles in 1977 in Charlotte. Specializing in Cajun fried chicken and fresh, homemade buttermilk biscuits, the restaurant soon became a favorite eatery with local residents. Today the chain has about 340 locations in NC alone.
In 1989, Morris Reaves opened the first Cookout restaurant on Randleman in Greensboro. This favorite eatery stands out for its inexpensive prices and the multitude of sides. Plus, the eatery serves another NC original, Cheerwine.
Furthermore, you can choose from over 40 different shake flavors. Additionally, you can mix these flavors to create new combinations. Also, many locations stay true to their origins by serving customers through drive-in only.
While this pizzeria is only a legend within the Piedmont area, Mario’s Pizza continues to spread throughout North Carolina. It all began in 1981 when brothers, Tony, Vinny, and Mario, moved from Brooklyn, NY to NC.
We began selling our signature style NY style pizza at our first pizzeria in Jacksonville. Since then, we’ve expanded the menu to include salads, calzones, strombolis, and several other authentic Italian dishes. Moreover, combined with our sister store, Tony’s Pizza, we have a total of 15 Italian restaurants throughout the state.
A North Carolina sweet treat had its start in 1937. At that time, Vernon Rudolph bought a secret yeast-raised doughnut recipe from a New Orleans French chef. He rented a building in historic Old Salem to bake his doughnuts for local grocery stores. When passersby began asking to buy some, Vernon cut a hole in an outside wall to sell directly to customers.
Although most people eat them for breakfast, doughnuts are actually a dessert. So, you would think with Krispy Kreme originating here in the Triad, that would be North Carolinians’ favorite treat.
Furthermore, North Carolina is a top producer of pecans, peaches, and sweet potatoes. Again, you might think our most popular dessert would be pecan pie, peach cobbler, or even sweet potato pie.
However, the most popular dessert in the Tar Heel state is a supremely moist cake. According to several sources, coconut cake tops the list.
As far as snack foods go, this one’s a toss-up. Some surveyors put Starbursts at the top, while others cite Muscadine grapes or Doritos as the favorite.
