What are you having for dinner tonight? Stop by Mario’s Pizza and let us serve you.
Americans love to eat out. Moreover, one of the most popular dining out choices is pizza. In fact, diners prefer pizza over hamburgers. When you want the best pizza in Greensboro, you want to stop at Mario’s.
Chiefly, Italian immigrants began arriving in Manhattan in the 1840s bringing with them their recipes from the old country. Although not all historians agree, most credit Gennaro Lombardi with opening the first NY city pizzeria in 1905. Whether it was Gennaro or some other immigrant, residents of the city soon craved this Italian fare.
While you’ll find many different styles of pizza across the country, the most iconic is New York style. Chefs begin with a thin, hand-tossed crust. Next, they spoon on tomato sauce seasoned with onions, garlic, basil, and oregano. Then, pizza chefs spread shredded, low-moisture mozzarella over the sauce. After baking, chefs cut the pie into large slices. Thus, diners must fold the slices in half to eat them.
If you’ve got a craving for the best pizza in Greensboro, NY style, you don’t have far to travel! With eight locations throughout the Piedmont Triad area, you can satisfy your craving for hot, delicious pizza. Plus, you can customize your pizza by choosing from our many toppings. Additionally, you can pick from 5 different sizes of pizzas depending on how many hungry diners you need to feed.
Additionally, we serve specialty pizzas with a variety of delicious toppings. One in particular, we named in tribute to our birthplace. New Yorkers know the 5 boroughs as Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx. Our namesake pizza has bacon, beef, ham, pepperoni, and sausage to satisfy your meat yearning.
Another specialty, white pizza, traces its origins back to ancient times. Thinking the tomato was poisonous, early people spread herbs, garlic, onions, cheese, and other local staples on their flatbread. Our Pizza Bianca is a blend of garlic, ricotta, and mozzarella cheeses.
Or maybe you prefer our vegetarian Greenhouse pizza. It’s topped with tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, black olives, spinach, and mushrooms. We also offer alternative diet options for individuals with sensitivities. Ask about our vegan cheese, cauliflower, or gluten-free crusts.
Of course, every one of our dishes uses fresh, local ingredients. Combined with our old-world recipes from Calabria, Italy, you’ll love our great-tasting Italian food.
Two other very popular Italian dishes are calzones and strombolis. While calzones and strombolis are very similar, some of the ingredients and the process for making each differ. Furthermore, calzones are several hundred years old while strombolis are a recent invention.
In 18th century Naples, Italy teemed with working poor. As people rushed through the streets looking for work, they’d grab slices of pizza to eat. However, pizza slices aren’t always easy to eat as you’re walking. Some bakers began to fold pizza dough in half, sealing it and then baking it. Thus, calzones became popular.
Strombolis are the invention of a Philadelphian immigrant, Nazzareno (Nat) Romano. As the owner of a pizzeria in the early 1950s, he began experimenting with a new stuffed sandwich. The stromboli, as this new sandwich became known, became a popular addition at many Italian restaurants.
Both dishes begin with pizza dough. Stuffing ingredients may vary, but calzones typically contain ricotta and mozzarella with tomato sauce on the side for dipping. Generally, strombolis have tomato sauce but never ricotta.
Also, the methods for sealing each are different. Chefs fold the dough of a calzone in half and crimp the edges. For strombolis, chefs roll the dough into a long, cylindrical shape. Typically, calzones are single-serving while strombolis feed many. Whichever you prefer, we serve delicious versions of both.
Although no one knows the exact origin of these tasty morsels, most historians agree garlic knots began somewhere in one of the 5 boroughs. Rather than throw out extra pizza dough, some pizza chef invented this ingenious, delectable treat.
Whether you enjoy these as an appetizer or an accompaniment, you’ll love our garlic knots. Soft and chewy on the inside, and crusty on the outside, these will soon become one of your favorites.
Additionally, we offer many other tantalizing appetizers including garlic bread, wings, toasted ravioli, and mozzarella sticks.
